Florida's first Micrsoft Store to open in Orlando Posted: 14 Aug 2012 06:56 AM PDT Not an Apple fan? South Florida PC enthusiasts can soon shop and swoon over Microsoft products inside the company's first retail store in Florida, although they'll have to make a drive. The Sunshine State's first Microsoft Store opens in the Florida Mall in Orlando on Thursday. The 4,470-square-foot outlet will sell Microsoft hardware and software including computers, cell phones, Xbox Kinect and Microsoft Office. Similar to the Apple Store, the MicrosoftSstore will have an answer desk for techincal questions, troubleshooting and repairs. The store will also host a 103-inch touchscreen in a theater format which can be used for community events. Microsoft began opening retail stores in 2009. There are 21 stores across the country so far. Last year, the company said it plans to open 75 more storefronts in the next three years. Apple, on the other hand, has more than 370 stores nationwide, including Aventura, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington and three stores in Miami. Digital Publix coupons available in Florida Posted: 13 Aug 2012 09:40 AM PDT Shoppers in parts of Florida and Alabama will be the first to test Publix's new digital coupons. Publix stores in Ocala, Birmingham and Huntsville are the first equipped with new technology that will allow shoppers to use paperless coupons at checkout. No stores in South Florida are ready to accept the digital coupons at this time, said Kimberly Reynolds, spokeswoman for Publix. Shoppers must sign up for the service by registering at Publix.com/dcoupon. Once registered, shoppers can digitally "clip" a coupon and review the coupons chosen online via a computer or smartphone any time. To redeem, shoppers just give the cashier the phone number used for the online registration. Coupons will then automatically be applied to the items listed. The online account will keep track of the coupons redeemed and those that were clipped. There are about 60 active coupons available to clip at this time. Coupon use is up by 27 percent since 2008, according to a study by California-based Knowledge Networks, a consumer research firm. The study shows that digital coupons are attracting more new buyers than print coupons by a margin of 35 percent. The Lakeland-based grocer already has a deal with Coupons.com that allows shoppers to go online and clip coupons virtually, then print them on paper for use at the store. This new system will eliminate having to use paper coupons and printed circular ads all together. Competitors like Winn-Dixie and northern grocers, Krogers and Bi-Lo offer discounts through membership cards. No other grocer with stores in South Florida use digital coupons that do not require printing — just yet. No grocers have tapped into the "app" market for smartphones, either.
