Ikea, the Swedish home furnishings retailer, announced plans to open a new store in Miami-Dade County.

Ikea officials will be submitting plans to build a second South Florida store location in the city of Sweetwater, west of the Miami International Airport, according to a press release. Construction could begin as early as the spring of next year and the store opening in early fall 2014, the release said.

The property in mind is on 14.6-acres at the intersection of the Dolphin Expressway and the Florida Turnpike near the Dolphin Mall. The 417,000-square-foot proposed Ikea store would be built above two levels of parking with 1,500 spaces, the release said. Store look and layout will be similar to other Ikea stores.

The retailer known for its discounted prices on furniture would bring more than 400 jobs to the area and 500 more during the construction phase.

"We are thrilled with the reception afforded Ikea since entering the state nearly five years ago, so we are excited to submit plans for IKEA Miami where we can grow our Florida and southeastern U.S. reach," said Mike Ward, Ikea U.S. president, in a news release. "This proposed store would complement our South Florida presence established in Sunrise and bring the unique family-friendly shopping experience closer to existing and new Miami-Dade customers."

The Miami location would be the fourth Ikea in Florida. Other locations include Sunrise, Tampa and Orlando. The store would feature 10,000 designer home furnishing items, 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a 500-seat restaurant and a supervised children's play area.

Ikea has more than 330 stores in 40 countries, including 38 in the U.S.

Florida's first American Girl store will open later this year in Miami's open-air mall, The Falls.

The new 16,000-square-foot storefront located on the east side of the mall near Bloomingdale's will open on Oct. 6. The store will have its own bistro, a doll hair salon and other interactive areas for children and parents.

The American Girl brand, a subsidiary of Mattel, makes dolls for girls and pairs each unique doll with a set of books. The new store will feature the brand's popular historical and contemporary dolls, doll outfits, accessories, and a section where shoppers can dress up like their own doll.

At the doll hair salon, shoppers can choose from ponytails to pierced ears to add to their dolls. A "Creativi-tees" boutique lets girls create T-shirts for themselves and their dolls.

"We're delighted to debut a beautiful new store in Miami and welcome our American Girl fans in the area to a special place designed just for them," says Jean McKenzie, executive vice president of American Girl in a news release.

A 60-seat bistro inside the store will serve lunch, dinner, dessert and tea during store hours. The menu ranges from cheese pizza and chicken tenders to a Mediterranean salad. The bistro will offer "doll-sized" menus too.

The store will also be equipped to host special events for birthday or dining parties. To make reservations, please call 1-877-247-5223.
