Bal Harbour Shops tops national ranking

Bal Harbour Shops in Bal Harbour is ranked the No. 1 most productive retail property by the International Council of Shopping Center's trade publication, Shopping Centers Today.

The open air, luxury chain mall has the top sales per square foot at $2,555, which blows away the ICSC-estimated average at $451-per-square-foot, according to a press release. Bal Harbour Shops ranked higher than nearby Aventura Mall, which was No. 16 with $1,100 in sales per-square-foot and Orlando's upscale The Mall at Millenia which ranked 10th.

Sawgrass Mills, an outlet center with more than 350 stores in Sunrise, was not included on the list.

The Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas, ranked No. 2 behind the Bal Harbour Shops.

The publication's September issue ranked the centers based on information from several worldwide advising and consultant firms and shopping center owners. Most centers included on the list host high-end chains.

"We continue to be the No. 1 shopping destination for luxury goods not only in the country, but also worldwide," operating partner Matthew Whitman Lazenby said in a news release. "The setting, the stores, the history and the attachment that shoppers feel to the center is what makes Bal Harbour Shops the world's premier luxury retail center."

Sales at Bal Harbour Shops have increased every year since the center's opening in 1965, except for in 2001 and 2009. The shopping center will soon add another 200,000 square feet and 50 new tenants now that a neighboring church has agreed to relocate to allow room for the expansion, according to a press release. Bal Harbour Shops has more than 100 retailers now, including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Prada and Valentino.
