Free entrance to national parks on Saturday

Get in free at U.S. National Parks on Saturday, Sept. 29, as part of the park system's free entrance program. The park service is waiving fees to over 100 parks around the country to celebrate National Public Lands Day.

Parks on the Florida list: Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, Canaveral National Seashore, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Explore Shark Valley by tram or bike and see thousands of beautiful migratory birds and countless alligators sunning themselves long the 15-mile loop. Call 305-221-8455 or visit Everglades Guided Tour page for prices and times.

Take the Anhinga Amble, a free, ranger-led 50-minute tour down the Anhinga Trail where visitors can easily view alligators, wading birds and other wildlife. Tours are at 10:30 a.m. daily thorugh November. Meet at Royal Palm benches.

Learn more about South Florida's fascinating Cold War history with a tour (offered December through April) of the Nike Missile Base inside Everglades National Park. Explore where the U.S. Army defended against Soviet and Cuban threats during the 1960s. The 1.5 hour, ranger-led expeditions start at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Other options include taking a bike or tram tour through Shark Valley or strolling down the Anhinga Trail.
