South Florida dentists let kids turn Halloween candy into cash to help troops

Here's a treat for our troops and there's no trick: The Great Halloween Candy Buy-Back program lets kids turn candy into cash by bringing their treats to participating South Florida dentists who then buy the candy and donate it to be used in holiday care packages to our troops.

Local dentists sign up (dentists can still register to participate) and agree to buy the candy for cash, coupons, food, services, or goods and toys. Then, dentists in turn send the candy to Operation Gratitude in California or another military-support group. Those groups will assemble and ship care packages to our soldiers. This year, Operation Gratitude has a goal of collecting 100,000 toothpaste and toothbrushes to include in the care packages.

The program is run by the California National Guard. Last year, the Operation Gratitude sent 125 tons of candy overseas. This is a great way to get rid of that excess candy and make a soldier smile.
